Most scholarship advice you'll find online is strategic. It's about vision, equity, donor relationships, the future of giving. Important conversations — but they don't help you on Monday morning when applications are coming in, your committee is overwhelmed, and your board is asking what last year's program actually accomplished.

Session 1 — Setting Up the Front End

Eligibility, Auto-Matching, and Application Design

A great scholarship program does two things at intake: it makes applying easy for the right candidates, and it makes sure those candidates land in the right opportunity. Most programs are unintentionally working against both.

The application is your program's first impression. If it takes 45 minutes to complete, requires a desktop computer, doesn't autosave, and asks for documents the applicant doesn't have on hand, the candidates you most want to reach will quietly close the tab. The applicants who push through aren't necessarily the strongest — they're the most patient.

On the other side of the form, your committee is paying for it. Every applicant who shouldn't qualify but applied anyway. Every applicant who applied to the wrong scholarship because there was no logic to route them. Every duplicate, every incomplete file, every missing transcript that should have been caught at submission. Hours of staff time, every cycle, spent fixing what the application should have done automatically.

Session 2 — The Review Engine

Assignment, Normalization, and Low-Barrier Scoring

Most scholarship programs spend a lot of energy thinking about who reviews their applications. Almost none spend the same energy on how applications get assigned to reviewers — and that's where program integrity actually lives.

Two reviewers, same scorecard, same application pool. One scores everything between 7 and 9. The other scores everything between 4 and 6. Whose applications win? In most programs, the answer is "the ones assigned to the first reviewer" — not because their applications were stronger, but because no one corrected for the difference.

That's just one of the silent integrity problems most committees have. Sequential queues that compound reviewer fatigue. Identical application order across reviewers that compounds anchoring bias.
